Billy Cookson | Dad by his side

Promising cricketer and all-round talented sportsman Billy Cookson, made the decision as most aspiring cricketers do, to travel to Australia and pursue his dream.

Left without a club during the English off season, Billy snapped at the chance to 'pro' for Melbourne's, Kyabram Cricket Club, who were certainly excited for the arrival of the talented wicket keeper, batter.

Two weeks after agreeing the deal, Billy would find himself settled into Australian life, and working the first shift of his new day job as a delivery driver. Little did he know, that the events of that day would change his life forever.

His vehicle was involved in a head on collision with a bus, that would leave him in a coma for 6 days. After waking up with his parents next to his bedside, Billy knew something was wrong.

The injuries Billy sustained would result in him needing 18 different surgeries, which would include a fusion of his Radius and Ulna in his right arm.

What is most remarkable about Billy's journey is how he has chosen to react to this unfortunate event. No excuses, no feeling sorry himself. In fact lying in his hospital bed, against all medical opinion, Billy set himself an improbable goal. He wanted to prove to himself that he could not only walk again, but get out onto the pitch and play the game he loves.

He achieved this exactly 1 year to the day, by turning out for Kyabram CC who had supported the young prodigy throughout.

Matt Cookson, Billy's dad arranged a 6 day trip to Australia, around work commitments, to surprise Billy, and be there to walk out with his son, for his return to cricket.

2 Years on and Billy's road to recovery continues on in Australia. The young man from Chippenham has big dreams to continue playing cricket, and involve himself in an event at the Para Olympic games. He also continues to do talks around the country sharing his story.

There is no doubt, he will have his father by his side.
